Catching most of this before day fifteen
- Run a real authorization check on the card at signup, even for a $0 trial - a small hold that's released catches a dead number or a typo while it's still a thirty-second fix, not a lost subscriber two weeks later.
- Send a reminder a few days before the trial ends that names the plan, the price, and the date - not just so the subscriber isn't surprised, but so a stale or swapped-out card gets caught while there's still time to fix it before billing day.
- Write the first-charge decline notice differently than a renewal decline notice - name the trial, the product, and the exact date it ends, instead of a generic "your payment failed" that assumes a relationship that hasn't been built yet.
- Give the subscriber a short, clearly-dated window to fix the card before the trial access lapses, rather than retrying silently in the background the way a renewal would.
- Track trial-to-paid conversion and its decline rate as its own number, separate from renewal recovery - they fail for different reasons, and blending them hides which one actually needs attention.
