AI for Shopify Subscription Management: What Sidekick and MCP Actually Do

What MCP is for, and who it's actually for

  • MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a developer-facing connection - it lets an AI coding tool like Claude, Cursor, or VS Code read a subscription app's real schema and API surface directly, instead of a developer guessing field names from stale docs
  • It speeds up building and debugging integration code - a script to bulk-migrate subscribers between plans, a custom portal flow, a report that doesn't exist yet - by giving the AI accurate, current context about what the app actually returns
  • It exposes the same capabilities a developer already has through the API and an Enterprise API key - MCP doesn't hand an AI tool any permission or action a human developer couldn't already take through the same credentials
  • A mistake made by AI-written code running through MCP is the same size mistake a human's code makes hitting the same endpoint - the fact that a prompt was in English doesn't shrink the blast radius of a bad bulk update
  • It's a faster way to write and understand integration code - not a reason to skip reading the code before it runs against a production subscriber list

Where the two get mixed up, and what that costs

  • Treating a Sidekick answer as always current to the second, when the report it's drawing from may lag live billing activity by the same interval the report itself always has - the AI didn't introduce that lag, but a question asked with more confidence than the data warrants can
  • Assuming that because MCP exists, an AI tool can be pointed at a subscriber list and told to "clean up the paused accounts" unattended - MCP gives a coding assistant context, not judgment about which paused accounts a merchant actually wants touched
  • Running an AI-authored migration script against real subscribers because it looks correct, without the same staging-environment test a hand-written script would get first - the code being AI-generated doesn't exempt it from the review a bulk write to billing data always needs
  • Asking Sidekick a policy question - should this subscriber get a retroactive refund, is this cancellation reason grounds for an exception - that isn't a data lookup at all, and getting a confident-sounding answer to it doesn't make it a decision the merchant can skip making themselves
Neither Sidekick nor MCP moves the line between a lookup and a decision. They just make it faster to reach the line - which only helps if someone still stops there.

How to actually use AI in a subscription program without handing it judgment it can't make

  1. Use Sidekick for lookups and navigation - subscriber counts, plan splits, this month's renewal total - not for policy calls like refund exceptions or cancellation-reason judgment, which need a person weighing context Sidekick doesn't have
  2. Use MCP to speed up writing and understanding integration code, and still run anything that touches subscriber billing through a staging environment first - the same discipline a hand-written script would get, regardless of who or what typed it
  3. Keep a human confirming any bulk action - a plan migration, a mass cancellation, a price change - that touches more than a handful of subscribers, no matter how the change was proposed or how confident the tool sounds
  4. Check what a connected app actually reports before trusting Sidekick's answer on it - a number Sidekick can't find isn't a number that doesn't exist, it's a report the app hasn't exposed yet
  5. Treat an AI coding assistant's output over MCP the way you'd treat a junior developer's first draft - useful, probably mostly right, and still worth reading before it ships
