The eligibility rules did their job. They just weren't built to answer a different question: not "is this edit allowed," but "is this order being edited an unreasonable number of times." Most order-edit setups gate what can change and until when - edit windows, fulfillment cutoffs, per-action rules - and stop there. Almost none of them gate how often, because a single edit count was never the thing anyone thought to write a rule for.
Why unlimited re-edits are more expensive than they look

What a per-order cap actually needs to do
The fix isn't refusing a fourth or fifth edit outright - a customer genuinely re-checking a size or address a few times isn't doing anything wrong, and a hard block reads as broken self-service to someone with a perfectly normal reason for coming back. The fix is treating edit count the same way an eligibility rule already treats an edit window or a fulfillment cutoff: as a threshold that routes to a different outcome, not a wall.
- Let the first two or three edits on an order auto-approve exactly as they do now - most legitimate re-edits happen in that range, and adding friction there costs more in completion rate than it saves
- Route anything past that threshold to manual review instead of auto-apply, the same way a high-value swap or an out-of-window request already does, so a human sees the pattern before the order ships
- Weight the threshold by what actually changed, not just the count - three quantity tweaks are a different risk than three shipping-address changes on the same order, and the rule should treat them differently
- Surface edit count on the order itself inside your admin, not just buried in the audit timeline, so a support agent glancing at an order for an unrelated reason sees the number without having to scroll
- Cap how often the same edit event can re-fire a downstream integration - a Slack alert or a Gorgias ticket built for a rare event turns into noise a team starts ignoring if one indecisive customer can trigger it eight times
